|Richard and Jill Goode started working together soon after they met in 1982. Richard had already built a successful stone masonry business so, when they moved to the mountains of Georgia, they continued working with stone and specialty decking for homeowners and contractors. The hard physical labor was an everyday strain on their bodies, and though skilled with plenty of work, they had a vision to create another business that would complement their stone work.
In a twist of fate, a client paid the Goodes for stone work with a hot tub, which they promptly fixed up and installed on their deck at home. The relief it brought them after the hard day’s work was something they agreed everyone should enjoy. According to Shannon Patterson, Accounting Manager and Sales person for Spa and Deck Creations, “They saw a great opportunity there and decided to start selling hot tubs.”
The original location in Blairsville, Georgia started out small. The Goodes grew their business carefully, strategically opening their second location in Blue Ridge, Georgia in 2002 when they knew the timing was right. Patterson is proud to be part of the success of Spa and Deck Creations. She states, “We now hold the hot tub market in the Georgia, Western North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee Tri-state area!”
Professionalism is a key ingredient in the Goodes’ recipe for success. Patterson states, “We are a dependable company and we stress professionalism.” This carries a lot of weight with their customers, both new and returning. “We also know consistent store hours are important,” states Patterson. “Customers know they’ll get served when they need us.”
Another way in which Spa and Deck Creations helps its customers is by servicing every hot tub and every brand. “Whether we sold it or not, we’ll service it!” says Patterson. Their service department is well- trained and certified in all types of service and repair making them respected and in high demand. “We know that good service people are hard to find so, we invest in our techs by providing training and education,” states Patterson. They are very proud of their service and delivery people and office staff.
The bar is set high for 2017 according to Patterson. “We are working hard to go on the Italy Trip with Nordic!” she says with a grin. “Our goals are to increase our sales incentives to reach our major goals. We like the challenge!” With determination as strong as Patterson’s, there is little doubt they will be touring the Italian countryside in October! She said she would send postcards…
One of Patterson’s favorite things about Nordic Hot Tubs is their powerful jet massage. She likes the way Nordic balances the jet to pump output to maximize the DTS™. “Plus, we don’t have to work on Nordic tubs often,” states Patterson. “They hold up very well!”
Patterson has this advice for other dealers, “It’s a great business to be in. It’s not easy but if you love what you do it’s great!” Patterson refers back to the professionalism Spa and Deck Creations is known for when she states, “You need to learn and know your products. We’ve seen dealers come and go but if you know what you are doing, you’ll stay!”

|American Pools & Spas has been a family owned business since 1976 when Wayne and Betty Barr opened their first store in Springfield, South Carolina. They started the business with the idea of giving customers the best in pools and pool supplies. In 1991 they expanded into the West Columbia area by opening their store at 2225 Platt Springs Road. Since that time they have added top of the line products such as hot tubs, above and in-ground pools and chemicals.
According to Kevin Davis, Sales and Marketing Manager for American Pools, the individualized customer attention is what sets American apart from the competition. “We give individualized attention and problem solving in each and every scenario and we give that attention to one customer at a time”, states Davis.
One significant change Brian Wilkinson, General Manager of American Pools has seen of late is the increase in competition from internet sales. “It’s an ongoing battle,” says Wilkinson. “However, we have our niche of providing hands-on care and attending to individual needs. In the age of the internet, being on a first name basis goes a long way in developing a relationship with your customer.” Davis agrees, stating, “We offer personalized warranty service with trained and certified technicians. With online purchasing, that’s hit or miss!”
Davis is confident that 2017 will be a great year for American Pools and Spas. He indicates they have already experienced great sales growth. He is excited about expansion plans which would increase the pool and hot tub display area. “We are looking at expanding and renovating our showroom later this year. This will allow us to show 7 – 8 hot tubs in addition to our pools.”
American Pools and Spas became a Nordic Dealer Partner in 2005. Both Wilkinson and Davis feel this was a great addition to their product line. He states, “The S.T.A.R approach is still my favorite thing about Nordic. Folks don’t like over-complicated stuff. The Simple, Therapeutic, Affordable and Reliable aspects of Nordic tubs makes them easy to sell.”
Davis offers this advice to other dealers, “Keep it simple. Don’t talk above your customers’ heads because they will pick up on that. You don’t have to impress them with YOUR knowledge. The point is to figure out their needs!”

|Nestled in the Great Smoky Mountains is Sevierville, Tennessee, home to Tennessee Hot Tubs. Founded in 1994 by Billy and Lynda Scott, their focus is on selling hot tubs, chemicals and supplies.
The Scotts have a rather interesting story about how they came to open a hot tub store in Sevierville. “We moved down from Michigan and left our hot tub back up North,” states Lynda. There wasn’t a hot tub dealer in the area at the time so they both quit their day jobs and opened a hot tub store.
Lynda knows what sets Tennessee Hot Tubs apart from the competition is that they are a reliable company. “We do what we say we’re going to do and we do it right away!” says Lynda. “Plus, we’ve been here for a long time, people know us.”
If Lynda can say there are any obstacles they have had to overcome it would be delivering hot tubs in the mountains! “We’re putting hot tubs on 60 to 70 foot high decks and hanging off cliffs!” she states with a grin. However, she and Billy learned early on how to wrangle hot tubs up the hills to install them for the most magnificent mountain views.
The Scotts are excited about 2017. “You know we had the forest fires up here late last year,” says Lynda. “It was awful but the town is rebuilding and getting back on track.” Although the fires stopped on the other side of the hill from the Tennessee Hot Tubs store, the Scotts are very aware of the damage that their friends and neighbors sustained. They are looking forward to a strong year as they help the resorts and homeowners rebuild and restore their properties.
In 2015 the Scotts decided to bring Nordic Hot Tubs into their showroom. It was a decision Lynda is happy she made. “Their quality is great and I like the fact they are made in Michigan, which is my home state!” she says with a chuckle. Lynda is also happy that Nordic stands behind its products with a great service department and an industry leading warranty. Currently the Scott’s son, Mitchell, is deployed in Kuwait with the US Army, so the fact that Nordic Hot Tubs are made in the USA is an additional point of pride for them.
What advice would she give to other dealers? “RUN!” Lynda quips with a laugh. “No, really, just be yourself and people will respect that. Also, don’t sell junk just to make money, sell quality products and know your products.” It’s that philosophy which has kept the Scotts working steadily and happily for 23 years. “I LOVE to come to work every day because I love what I do,” exclaims Lynda. Good advice!
