Filter Cartridges By Model 2017
What filter cartridge should you use for your Nordic Hot Tub?

The answer is, it varies.

Hang on....that's kind of a vague answer!  Isn't Nordic committed to keeping things simple?

YES WE ARE!  Although 'it varies' sounds like a vague answer, it really is in keeping with our STAR Philosophy of Simplicity and here's why:

We limit the number of filter cartridge sizes we use to just a few so it isn't an Easter Egg hunt when you need to replace your cartridge.  Also, we selected the filter cartridge sizes for optimum fit and filtration of each model hot tub.

If you are in doubt which filter to re-order for your Nordic Hot Tub, you can either contact your local dealer or, download our Filter Cartridge Guide to decide what you need.

Backyard Living - Fire Pits

Posted in Backyard Living

FirepitFire….one of the 5 classical elements with which the Ancient Greeks explained the nature of all things.

Primal. Hypnotic. Romantic. Captivating. Fire draws us in.

It is also a great complement to a hot tub! The addition of a fire pit to your backyard gives you the juxtaposition of the elements, fire and water.  It can bring your personal oasis space to the next level.

If you decide to add a firepit, there are 2 very important considerations before you purchase or begin building.

First, familiarize yourself with the local ordinances and building codes governing open fire in your area.  In some places open flame is not legal so, it’s best to check first before committing to any
 contract or purchase

The second consideration is safety.  You quite literally do not want to play with fire here!  Especially if you are a DIY-er, a professional consultation is worth the cost you might incur.  A professional will be well-versed in your local codes and will be able to recognize or point out safety issues before you get started. Remember, if in doubt, err on the side of being TOO cautious.

Our friends at All State Insurance have some great backyard fire pit guidelines for you to consider before you’re toasting S’Mores over your fire!

It's Summer!  Hooray!!

While that means we are completely out of our Winter Cold hibernation up in the North, it can mean going into Summer Heat hibernation in warmer climates!

Extremely warm ambient air temperatures can create issues for your hot tub too. After all, a hot tub is a small body of water. If the sunshine and warm temps heat up large bodies of water like lakes and pools, it's only resonable that your hot tub is affected as well.

Ok, so what can you do when the water in your hot tub is too hot?  Not to worry! We have a few Tips & Tricks for you to try before you call your local dealer for a service call.

Ah! You're ready for some quality hot tub time! You open the cover.... hmm, something isn't right ...it doesn't seem to be heating.  What's going on?

There can be a number of reasons why your hot tub isn’t heating but let's check out some basic trouble shooting tips and tricks you can do before you call your Service Tech.

First, is there power to the tub?
For 110 Plug N Plays: Check to make sure your hot tub is plugged in and the GFCI isn’t tripped.  If the GFCI is tripped, push the reset button. If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

For a 220V hook up: Check your breaker box to see if the circuit has tripped. If it is tripped, reset your breaker to the 'on' position. If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

Ok! So now that you have determined you have power, is there an Error Code displayed on your topside control?  Refer to our list of Common Topside Codes: Single Pump Systems or Dual Pump Systems.

Now check to see if the pump is working. Push the button on the topside control to turn on the pump(s). If it doesn’t start, call your dealer for service.

If you have checked the things on this list and the hot tub still isn't heating or working properly, don’t guess or take any chances…call your dealer for service!

Jets On Strike!

Whirlpool Therapy JetForBrochure
Some (or all) of the jets in your hot tub aren't working.  What should you do?

Let's cover some basic trouble shooting Tips & Tricks you can do which might just fix the issue before you call your Service Tech.

First, turn the pump on and turn the flange of each non-working jet to see if it has been turned ‘off’.

Next, turn the Whirlpool Jet  ¼ turn and check if the jets begin to work.

Check to make sure the water level in your tub is above the filter level. If the water level is below the filter level, add water immediately!

Check your filter to make sure it is clean and free of debris.

If you have recently drained and refilled your hot tub, you might have an air lock. Call your dealer for recommendations to remedy this and prevent in the future.

If you have gone through these basic steps and the jets still are not working, call your dealer for service.

Circuit Breakers
The GFCI on my electrical hook up is tripping! What do I do?

The good news is the GFCI is doing its job!  The not-so-good news is that it can be frustrating.  Well, don't fret, we have a couple of basic things for you to try.

For 110 Plug N Plays: Push the reset button.  If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

For 220V hook up: Check your breaker box to see that it isn’t tripped. If the breaker is tripped, reset your breaker. If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

If your hot tub is tripping the GFCI regularly and won't stay in the 'on' position, don't delay in calling your dealer for service.  Waiting could make the problem worse and no one wants that to happen!  Always remember, when it doubt, contact your dealer!

Safe Hot Tubbing!

Posted in Hot Tubs

Encore summer shoot 048 crop
When you think about using your Nordic Hot Tub, what comes to mind?

      Relaxation?

      Pain and Stress Relief?

      Fun and Recreation?

Perfect!  Those are all reasons why we make hot tubs for YOU!

However, there is one more important thing for you to think about.  And that’s…..Safety!

As a hot tub owner, safety should stay at the forefront of your mind.  You want to make sure everyone using your hot tub not only has a great time, but stays safe in and around your hot tub!

Here are a few Hot Tub Safety Tips from the APSP, The Association of Pool & Spa Professionals©!

"Infants and toddlers should not be permitted in a hot tub at all as babies' thin skin makes them more susceptible to overheating. Also, since little ones have very little control over bodily functions, spas become unsanitary almost instantly when "accidents" happen.

No young child should be allowed in a hot tub until they can stand on the bottom and have their head remain completely out of the water. Children who are big enough to be in a hot tub should not use it for more than five minutes at a time, especially at the maximum temperature of 104 degrees. Dropping the spa temperature to 98 degrees would allow for longer soaks – but never more than 15 minutes at a time. It is also recommended that young children avoid full body immersion, choosing instead to sit on "jump seats" that some spas have that permit waist-high immersion.

All persons, and especially young children, should be encouraged to drink fresh water while they're soaking. If the bather feels sick to their stomach, dizzy and/or sleepy, they should exit the spa immediately.

Responsible Adult Supervision is Key to Child Pool, Hot Tub Safety and Water Safety. There should always be an adult designated to maintain constant visual contact with children whenever they are near, or could get near, any body of water."

We wish you many happy hours of SAFE hot tubbing in your Nordic Hot Tub!

Accent Your Spa to Create a True Relaxation Spot!

Posted in Backyard Living

Pool PergolaPergolas, sun shades and umbrellas create height and dimension.By Angela Moss

At the end of a long day there is nothing better than climbing into your spa to soak aches, and the day, away! You can make that experience even more enjoyable by the atmosphere and views you create, around your spa. Many homeowners are taking their backyard relaxation spot to a whole new level with creativity, class and elegance.

Whether your space is big or small, consider adding a variety of height, texture and practical accessories to make your spa time more enjoyable.

There are several ways to create height in the hardscape. First is with the spa itself. You can have the spa sit completely above ground, set part way into the ground by using retaining walls or a wood deck or, depending on the lay of your land, some spas are completely recessed in the ground. If you are considering recessing your spa partially or fully, be sure to properly plan for access to the service panel. You’ll want to make it easy if a technician ever needs to service a pump or any other equipment behind the service panel. For easy reference, the service panel is always on the same side as the top side control.

Other ways to create height and dimension to your space are by to adding a pergola, sun shade or umbrella. These options are cost effective ways to add beauty and shade. Using hardscape to create half walls, pillars and custom outdoor kitchens is another excellent way to give dimension and have a functional and beautiful backyard for your family to unwind and enjoy time together.

When it comes to accessories the list is endless. I suggest keeping it practical and functional for your family’s needs. First consider how you will enter and exit your spa and be sure to create a safe entry system. You can get basic spa steps made of plastic or wood or you can ‘step up’ the look with ones that are custom-built.

There are several options for handrails as well that give you something sturdy to grab when getting in and out of your spa.

Cover lifters are one of the best accessories next to steps for safe entry. A cover lifter makes it easier to open and close the cover and extends the life of the cover. Especially on larger spas the cover is big and is more difficult for one person to remove by themselves.  Also, if you live in a colder climate everyone wants to get back into the house as soon as possible after getting out of their spa, and a cover lifter makes closing the spa quick and easy. It keeps your cover off the ground which prevents it from getting bumped around and helps extend its life.

In creating an overall relaxing atmosphere consider what you hear when you are in your spa. If your home is located in a peaceful area you may enjoy the simple sounds of nature.  However, many spa owners hear the sounds of their neighborhood and street noise. So, if your backyard is less than peaceful, you may want to give some thought to adding a stereo system to your relaxation space. There are lots of outdoor sound options and some are very basic such as placing a Bluetooth outdoor speaker close by.

True stress relief and a better night’s sleep can be achieved if you engage all your senses through the hydrotherapy of the jets, an enjoyable view, calming music and of course, a relaxing scent!  A spa fragrance adds the last piece of the relaxation puzzle. Now, when it comes to spa fragrances, make sure to use products designed for spa use. These products are compatible with the chemicals used to keep your spa clean and are easy on your skin.

If you are just starting to plan for a spa or have had one for years, adding architectural elements and creating a true relaxation spot should be high on your to-do list!

Happy Hot Tubbing!

Create height and variety of space with backyard landscape, hardscape and architectural elements.

It's SPRING!!

Posted in Hot Tubs

springIt's time to SPRING CLEAN your
Nordic Hot Tub!
Maybe the weather isn’t telling you as much but, IT’S SPRING!!

Up here in the North it’s been a cold and dreary spring so far but, that doesn’t mean beautiful weather isn’t on the way.

Wait, isn’t this a hot tub blog?  What does talking about the weather have to do with hot tubs?

Well, a lot actually! We recommend draining, cleaning and refilling your hot tub twice a year and spring is a perfect time to do it. Think of it as Spring Cleaning for your Nordic Hot Tub!

Here are a few suggestions of things to do.

1.       Turn the power off to your hot tub at the breaker box.  You don’t want the pump to kick on when there is no water in the tub.

2.       Drain your hot tub. Take a good look at your tub without water in it and call your dealer for service, if needed.

3.       Wipe the entire hot tub out with a tub cleaner.  There are many products on the market.  Contact your local dealer for their recommendations. If there are white water lines a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50) should remove them.

4.       Deep clean your filter or purchase a new one.  Make sure to remove any debris that is lodged between the pleats.  If you have had the filter for a while, it may be time to replace it with a new one.

5.       Clean the cover with a marine vinyl cleaner and a UV protectant. Again, there are many vinyl cleaning and UV protectant products on the market, just make sure you are using one that is specifically formulated for vinyl.

6.       Rinse off the PermaWood cabinet and clean with a soft cloth. If you have a Natural Cedar cabinet, check to see if it needs some attention.

7.       Check the expiration dates on your chemicals and test strips…yes, they have a shelf life!  Is it time to purchase new ones?

8.       Refill your hot tub, turn the power back on, balance your water and enjoy!

Remember, the best maintenance for your Nordic Hot Tub is routine hot tub care and water chemistry.  If you need help or advice on what to do, which products to use or someone to show you how, contact your Nordic Hot Tub dealer.

Installing a Hot Tub on your Deck

Posted in Hot Tubs

Deck JoistsConsult with a building contractor or structural engineer to ensure safety.First, consult with a qualified building contractor or structural engineer before placing your hot tub on an elevated deck. You want to make sure your deck structure is strong enough to bear the weight of your filled hot tub.

Second, give the contractor your tub specifications which will include the dry weight and the water capacity of the hot tub.  Nordic provides all the necessary specifications for each tub both on our website and in the owners manual for each hot tub.  Don't forget to add the weight of the people that will be enjoying the hot tub!

Your deck design is limited only by your imagination. Placing your hot tub on top of the deck is the easiest installation.  This also provides quick access for servicing components!

However, if you want to install your hot tub below the deck or build a custom deck around it, make sure to inform the contractor you will need to have unrestricted access to the access panel for service.
